Rear Silencer

Much has been said on this subject before but has anyone bought a rear silencer from GSF :?:  Are they made by Ernst :?:

GSF supplied me with a Bosal, an OE supplier. Check for dents as they tend to get bashed around a bit in transport.

Backbox

I got my local Exhaust fitter to remove a stainless steel scorpion dtm backbox and fitted a replacement from I think gsf. It cost ?40 fitted and they had no problems. I'll double check to see if they used gsf for parts and I'll update if they didn't. The car sounds so much better and feels more reponsive though the tailpipe does look ugly coz of the bland silver finish.

Bland silver is the way it was meant to be  :D

I cut off the crome bo**********s and welded on and painted a new tail pipe of the correct diameter!

Coincidentally, I was looking through the GSF catalogue last night at exhausts for something to use when the restoration is finished.
Has anyone any longterm opinions on the GSF ones, or are exhausts still available from VW?

I don't want stainless, just something subtle to resemble OE stuff…..

I don't think Mk1 exhausts are available from VW any more sadly.

General consensus seems to be that the GSF OE quality ones (Ernst/Bosal) are a good fit and look very original. If we're honest though even the original VW Mk1 exhaust design was never particlularly "pretty"

Not sure on the longevity stakes, but they are very good value. You can replace pretty much the whole system from the manifold back for about 100 quid. Even if it only lasts a year or two that doesn't seem too bad to me.

I will be buying a complete system within the next few months for my Campaign and will probably go with the OE GSF system, barring some incredibly lucky genuine VW autojumble find

What year and model do you have?

For a 1.6 GTi I know they are no longer available from VW. I think downpipe and centre box are the same for 1.8 GTi, rear box is different. Ernst and Bosal from GSF are both OE quality and I have had no problems.

I did manage to get a rear box for my 1976 1.6 carb from VW though for about ?22 :D

I have a 1983  ( ) 1.8 GTI

Doesn't seem like anybody is saying anything bad…fitment or otherwise.

As said, I thought the prices were very good too…even if it does have to be replaced in a couple of years. Cars going to be dry weather use only so that should help!

Cheers guys.

I've just picked up a rear box from GSF. It's an Ernst item same as from VW. I also checked with my friendly VW parts man and they are no longer available from VW. Total cost including new clamp ?44.36.  :D  and it was in stock :!:  How rare is that these days.

Just got the a back box from GSF.
Was a little dissapointed, cos it isn't a straight pipe sticking out of the middle, it's a bent pipe comming from one side.
I don't think it has the same effect.
That one was an ernst.

So Guest, was your backbox an Ernst item too?

The one I had was aluminiumised steel and the tailpipe did actually polish up a bit. Looked much better! It was the more expensive of the two that GSF do…

Picked up a complete system from GSF the other day, just crawled out from underneath and it fits so much better than any modified exhaust I've ever fitted. No knocking and and sounds perfect…..It's Ernst too. I've dealt with GSF throughout my restoration and they've been really good, apart from sending the odd wrong piece!!
