Problems filling up

As some of you know, I'm new to the Mk1 Golf thing so I have to ask if my current experience is typical.

More often than not whenever I fill up I get a foot covered in Super Unleaded. For some reason the auto stop doesn't work!!! I'm getting in to the habit of standing as far from the filler as possible just in case I get splashed. Am I holding the spout in the wrong position? is there a knack to it? Or am I just unlucky in finding busted pumps?

Thanks

How am I supposed to know where the brim is? I just fill until it stops (or not). I don't enjoy the filling up trip once every couple of weeks so I stuff as much in as possible to stave off the next visit.

Filling up the filler neck wont make any difference as it will get condensation in there any way (just look at the back of your filler cap next time) and Mk1 necks rust from the outside as they are "open" to dirt etc. Am I right in thinking you use the same petrol station? as I have had the nozzle not stop when filling up my Rallye. It was a faulty pump.
I guess the best way is to fill slowly a quarter full tank takes ?30 to fill give or take a few pounds so use the pumps gauge.

Yeah, my old cabby did this, I think it must be something to do with breather pipes but I never bothered to investigate as I just got into the habit of knowing when it was getting towards full and then easing off on the pump trigger a bit so petrol went in slower. It didn't spash out then.

Its definately a fault you have as my other Mk1s don't do it.

I filled up mine for the first time this week, and I had the same experience.

I don't think my breather pipes are blocked - next time I'll go on the fuel pump gauge though! 40 litres when empty seemed to do the trick.

You should be able to hear it bubbling up the filler neck before it hits your shoes!!!

Possibly true enough, but I don't!
