Problem solved!

I've been having a nasty problem with my engine. I built myself a 1.6 block with a 1.8 gti head, on twin Delorttos and a full exhaust system.

The engine was set up on a rolling road and proven to pull a healthy 105 bhp, I got the car home and went to the mot and it failed on the back brakes!!

I played with the brakes and went for a test and the engine cut out.

Turned out to be rust from the tank to be blocking the filter.

A new tank and filler neck later it ticked over lovley and smooth, but when I took it to the exhaust place near me it cut out again.

new coil and dizzy cap, ran better, so went for another drive and yet again it died!!

At this point I was taking pictures of it for ebay!!

I decided to have another look today and loosened off all the fuel lines all fine, so as a check I looked at the fuel filter, took it off and unscrewed it and removed the filter.

There it was loads of tiny bits of rust blocking nearly all the holes in the filter, so I put the filter housing back together with out the filter fired it up and went for a 10 minute drive!!!

I'm now the happiest person on the planet and will be getting the car MOTed forthwith!!

Just a little bit of info for anyone who is having similar simptoms.

I'd recommend putting a new filter in a.s.a.p - there's a chance that more rust, left over from the previous filler neck, will get into the carbs and fuel lines and clog those as well.

To replace a filter is about ?10, but to replace the carbs etc… you're looking at hundreds. If you have the same trouble, keep replacing the filter until all the rust has been removed…
