Possible fuel blockage...

Ive only had this mk1 for a few days now…but runnin it along the motorway was a nightmare  :banghead:  At about 55-70mph the car starts to judder and the speed starts to drop (as it would if u removed ur foot from the throttle) at about 15mph the engine will cut out…and struggle to turn back on.
I believe it may be a bad fuel line, but this is my first mk1 so not if this is a common problem…any comments or help would be appreciated.

This problem could be due to a number of issues:

Carb icing - do a search on this forum for more details
Weak fuel pump - only real way to test is to replace
Blocked fuel lines - could be blocked filter - cheap and easy to replace
Incorrect setup on carb - Float position and adjustment

I have a used 1.3 fuel pump if you want one for not much.

How long before it can re-start and run properly? If it?s only a min or so I?d suspect icing, a hot engine will clear itself in no time at all. Is the preheat pipe connected to the tin shield on the exhaust manifold? If it clears after a while (5-10mins) I?d suspect muck and rust from a corroded filler pipe is blocking the fuel lines and filters.

Have a look in the tank via the inspection hatch/fuel sender with a torch.

One of my Drivers did the same, would run for about 5-7 miles then conk out. Blowing back down the pipe from the tank cured it temporary for another 5 miles. The eventual solution was to take the tank off and swill out the crud. The Carb tanks are not as easy to clean out as the injected versions unfortunately?.

It tends to vary as to how long it takes to get back on, anything from straight away to about 5mins. havnt had the chance to hav a proper look at the fuel line yet as uni is takin up most of my time…plan on (tryin) cleanin it out friday.

I had exactly the same problem on mine years ago.
Sloved it by removing the fuel return pipe from the carb and pluging it!  8O

Car ran sweetly after that until I eventually stuck a bigger engine in…

Had the same problewm - was traced to the rusty fuel neck filler (classic mk1 problem),. Build up of rust was blocking the in tank filter.
Not a 5 min job to replace. I'd recommend getting a replacement filler yourself and then ask a garage to fit it (unlike me who got a garage to source one at a seriously elevated price  :cry: ).

You should drink more water.
1664 is 95% water.
Drink more beer? :)

cheers for all the help guys….fink its gona b to much of a job for me to handle so i wil take it to a VAG specialist to take a look…wot r overdrafts for ay!!  :)   Thanx for the help…appreciated!

I think i'm having the same problem with my driver, there was a bad loss of power when trying to accelerate and it wouldn't idle, broke down on saturday when it cut out when i came to a stop and wouldn't restart.  :cry:
 Tested the pump on the roadside and it wasn't getting any fuel, took out the inline filter and it was fine, does this sound like a blocked line?
