packed up!!

Right, a week ago my fuel pump gave in, it started by making loud electrivcal noises, then the engine would die if my foot went down more then half throttle. So i changed the fuel pump. Now five days later exactly the same has happened, except its not making as much noise but its a lot worse. Just wondering, could this be anything other than a faulty fuel pump, before i give gsf a ring ??

Cheers,

Dave

It could be blockage due to rust/dirt in the fuel system - a common problem with Mk1 Golfs. The only real solution here is to remove and clean out, or replace, the fuel tank. Bank on around 5 hours all told for this kind of job.

People have had success in a technique where you place a large magnet on the outside of the tank (eg an old speaker), then once the dirt is in one place, lifting it out with a smaller magnet on an extension probe, through the level gauge access hole. But I can't work out how you can pick up non-magnetic dirt this way.

Have a look at the condition of your filler neck - especially at the top of the pipe where it meets the bodywork - if this is rusty or rusted through then this will be the cause of dirt in the fuel system.

Try the magnet method, but if it comes to it you may need to remove the tank and flush it properly to remove the crap inside.

Yeah i did think this was the case, the filler neck has been replaced before so i gather there's plenty of muck in my fuel tank, just can't believe how this new fuel pump only lasted five days when the other one's lasted years! Recon i can get my money back from gsf for the fuel pump??

Cheers for the replies,

Dave
