No fuel reservoir??

I seem to be missing a fuel reservoir on my 1.8 carb model its supposed to be between the fuel pump and the carb..!  but my fuel pump is connected straight to the carb..?

What does the reservoir do..  and why would I not have one?

Any ideas?

Just had another look and have noticed that the fuel return pipe has been blocked off..

Now from what I have read I understand that I have nothing deperating air bubbles from the fuel, and I am also pumping all the fuel into the carb which should cost me a fortune in mpg !!!

I have no idea what the running costs are as I haven't had it on the road yet !

Is this right?

Should have the reservoir above the pump, near the airbox mounting bracket, should have a fuel line from the pump to the reservoir, then from there to carb, plus a third line as a return.   Its obviously been bypassed prior to me owning the car..

The reason it will have been removed would almost certainly be because it was full of crud.

As the fule flows through the crud rises to the top and blocks the strainer blocking the fule outlet. Then cutting the engine.

In an ideal world yes ( if available )

It may be that it was done by a garage and the owber did not know, but was happy it was running ok again.

Or it may have been done by the previous owner and left as it worked..

If you can get hold of one then it would be better to have it fitted.

Mind you we have not had one on our 1.3 for 2 years… The original packed up and caused many months of head scratching.. And the replacement died after a year too.

Do these work like a swirl pot ?

Swirl pots are usualy used on fule injection cars to get bubbles out of the fast flowing fule.

In this case I think it's simply to regulate the amount of fule to the carb.

I can't say I have had any problems in 15K and the engine has just been apart to replace bent valves and looks fine.

I see, I thought these did that for the golf aswell as return unneeded fuel?
