mpg

just wondering what sort of  mpg everyone gets ?

i've just got my car on the road well new years day after a years worth of rebuild it's a 1.6Gti and i manged to get just over 29mpg but not sure how good that is ?

i had a few drives where i accelerated enthusiastically but as it's a partly fresh engine i don't wanna push it ! (it has been run in)

is the fuel pump meant to run all the time ?

Cheers Stuart

I've had near 40mpg on a long motorway run before but doubt I get that all the time!

The fuel pump does always run - or you'd get no fuel.

ummm… fuel consumption…………. get about 17mpg on the MK1 no matter how I drive it   .

Remember when I used ot go to Inters at TRL, and had to leave with a full tank and then fill up before coming home !!

Fuel pump, yep as soon as the engine starts to turn over the pump is running and stays running untill the engines switched off  :)

Was that the reading on the MFA or did you calculate it?

i calculated the amount was only over 108 miles so will know for sure soon when i run it for longer.

only reason i asked about the fuel pump was some cars when you turn the ignition on run and build up pressure and stop until started.

i will rolling road it when i'm back at college and see what the fuellings like see if i can make it run any better !

Cheers for your replies

I calculated my mpg for 3-4 150 miles + journeys last year and everytime the figure came to around 34mpg, which seems ok. Most of these journeys included motorway, a road and b road and a bit of urban driving. Wonder how much effect petrol brand has on it? Most of these journeys where using Shell Optimax.

mark,

out of all the higher octane fuels i believe that bp ultimate is better than optimax as optimax loses it's potency.

i managed better efficiency and my car felt more responsive when i used it in my mazda 323 turbo so always worth a try.

i think i will be using some 4 star mixed with unleaded.

I manage to get 37 mpg from my Mk1 nearly all the time. However, there are occasions when it's lower

When my golf was on the road (hopefully it should be again soon!) I was getting about 100 miles to ?10 of fuel, which calculates back to about 37mpg.

Mind u that is with fairly 'good' driving as I don't like to push my car too far, I like it too much!  The MPG on the MFA readout gave an average reading of around 69mpg! How in-acurate can it get!
