MK1 Keeps popping fuel pump fuses help!

We've had my mk1 apart other the winter including the fuel pump because the mk1 needed new fuel lines, since its been running again she has a habit of popping the fuel pump fuse the final straw was lastnite when it went through 3 fuses and the car hadnt moved was just sat idling while warming up. Each time it just cuts out obviously. Worrying bit is im sure i saw some smoke from under the car. Anyone have any ideas?

sitting around hasnt agreed with the pump. interal contacts have become corroded. if you keep changing fuses it may stop it time but how long?

or the wires are shorting at the pump.

remember where theres smoke theres fire.

so  be carfull !!

if first you dont succeed. read the instructions.

Make sure the wires are not shorting in something - check the wires for heat when the fuse goes to try and find the fault.

Finally could be over current draw from the pump

The more i think about it the more i dont think its the pump itself because the first time it popped a fuse it did around 1500 trouble free miles after. and lastnite the pump primed the system everytime and ran for 5-6minutes before taking the fuse out, then before it popped the last one it idled 1 or so minutes before popping. We've had real heavy rain in york so hoping its more like waters got in and taken the relay out or broke a contact like you say. What i thought was smoke could of maybe of been water evaporating due to the heat possibly(Thinking about it the night it orginally popped the fuse it had been peeing down too) will have to megger the wires at the weekend check nothings happened to them, check contacts, and short relay out if neither of them work i know its the pump. Does that sound about right way to go about it? Thanks so much for the help. It is reasuring to know theres somwhere to go with problems like this 8)

dont no if this is of any help to you but its worth a try. i had same problem on my cab. i had changed the fuel filter for a new copy part from gsf. car started as normal drove about 2miles down the road and the engine cut out. after a bit of investigating i found the fuse to the fuel pump had blown i new it must have been something to do with the fuel filter bcause it was the only thing i had changed and the car run ok prior to that. put the old filter back on and the car is right again now. if you have changed your filter put your old one back on and see how it goes. its worth a try
