mk1 cabby exhaust blowing manifold
my mk1 h plate 1800 has been blowing from the manifold to down pipe so i got all new clamps c type ones,a new gasket and even the proper tool to change c clamps the gasket that was on was a solid piece of round steel and my new one is that mesh wire stuff anyway replaced the lot and its still blowing tried moving exhaust whilst engine running still no joy,any ideas what should be in between the manifold and down pipe as i thought fitting that new gasket would have sorted it but it hasnt, cheers steve

Was the metal divide still in place inside the manifold or has it cracked off? you get a blowing sound if it's missing and maybe a rattle if it hasnt wedged itself somewhere in the downpipe.
Have a look at this thread…

Its quite a common problem. The divide in the manifold meets with the divide in the downpipe when the sealing ring or downpipe flange wear too much.
Otherwise I cant see why it would still blow if you have changed the C clamps and the sealing ring. Oh and the solid ring is how they come from VW, the mesh is an aftermarket job, atleast thats what I've found from experience.
Let us know how you get on.
