mk1 cab starts then cuts out

Hello,
         
After many hours of searching the net i am unable to find out the solution.My 91 cabriolet 1.8 carb is idlling eractically.Then it cut out and will not run again.I deceided to remove tohe fuel sender unit but it wouldnt budge so ended up smashing it with a screwdriver and mallet.I found some rust in the tank(also a tiny amount of water 15ml or so) and syphoned the petrol out.And removed the rust with a telescopic magnet.
                                                 I tried to get an orignal mk1 golf sender unit but they are obsulete now.And had to the go to scrappee Who had a mk1 golf gti.

So the fuel sender unit I`ve fitted to mine as a pump attached to it which i wired up from the ignition to a switch mounted on the dash.

Lots of petrol getting through but have to switch of the fuel sender unit to stop flooding.Car started but cuts out again.I`ve checked one plug and dry.
     Any help much appreiciated

Hiya,
You'll get loads of better advice from peeps more experienced than me BUT…
Q1. Have you changed the fuel filter? If not - do it. 3 squid is nowt!
Q2. (Really should be Q1 actually). Fuel neck filler…. Has it been replaced (guessing not)? I'm sure you are aware of the history on this topic!
Q3. When was the carb last given a decent clean?
Q4. What IS the carb. I've had 2 clippers that have both been upgraded to the manual choke Weber carb - previous owners hated the originals (see other posts). I've had no fuel troubles with Webers, others may contradict!

You should drink more water.
1664 is 95% water.

CLeaned fuel filter out

I cleaned the fuel filter out a bit tight on cash.ANd the filler neck as been replaced because th eold one had rust holes you could put your fingers into.
       THe pierburg has not been serviced for years so is it a big job to check if crap might of got in there The fuel filter was full of bits of rust.And i was told that When the pierburg 2e2 is setup o.k they are fine people dont like them because they are complicated,but the webber as problems with the choke.

car wont start from starter motor

Also the car wont start by just turning the key but will if i put my foot on the acclerator.DOes any one no what this might be.

Check for vaccum leaks and for damage/splits to the rubber mount under the carb.  Check the fuel pump is working effectively.

get a carb repair kit or a replacement carb and try that.  I have a used 1.8 pieburg carb if you need one.

got car running today

Hi
    Car is runnig now the ht lead to the coil as split and was arching so i wd40 it and taped it up still seems to be be reving a bit high.Thanks guys for your responce
