Mk 1 Clipper Cabriolet Fuel Supply Issue

Hi All,
Firstly, great forum, good to see the Golf has a good following.

Now would anyone be able to assist diagnose the issue I have on the wifes car?

The car is a 1989 Clipper cabby, with a 1.8 engine, carb model. The car gave up on me whilst I was driving along, with no warning at all. I had recently had the Pieburg 2E2 carb serviced and a new 3 point unit and waxstat fitted a couple of months prior.
Now I left the car on the drive for months as we had alternative transport, but when I came across a brand new Weber 32/34 carb on a Scirocco in the scrapyard for ?10 I had it, along with a a water hose fro manifold to pipe near brake servo.
I fitted the carb, as it was a simple bolt on affair, along with a new fuel filter. I have added fresh fuel to the ank to eliminate petrol level.
Now when I try to start the car, the tacho needle bumps up and down and there is a spark, but no fuel is getting through, as the inline filter is empty. This was the symptom before I changed the carb over, but hoped the Weber would cure it. I connected a high pressure airline to the hose before the fuel filter and blewback into the tank and it was merrily bubbling away, and I did it from the rubber fuel pipe on the Weber, back to the outlet of the inline fuel filter and it spayed a bit of fuel.
There is a new looking gold unit just above the oil filter, which I presume may be a fuel pump, but I do not really know the workings of carburettor systems. This unit then leads on to like a reservoir bolted to the rocker cover.
Am I missing something obvious, or can you point me in the direction of where I should be looking?
Thanks
Phil

The 'gold unit' is indeed the mech fuel pump, a lot of my rubber/cloth braided fuel lines that fit to the in line filter had corroded and hence had an air leak !! worth a check as there is a lot of places the rubber/cloth braided lines can leak from.

How would I check that the fuel pump is working as although it looks new,  that means nothing until I can eliminate it.

I solved this today...the fuel pipe from the fuel flter to the fuel pump had chafed and worn through. Running a treat now.
