manifold to downpipe leak

when did the o ring & clamps exhaust manifold replace the 6 stud type. I have tried both types of seal, solid ring & mesh and mine still leaks. Now considering changing manifold

I've had loads of problems with the C type on my Cabrio. New C clamps stopped it leaking but I've got nasty squeaks whenever I accelerate and decelerate, I think its the Ernst down pipe I got that?s causing it, I don?t think its been made quite right.

I could do with a new manifold too as the centre divide had sheered off. I managed to weld it back on but I get a bit of air rush noise under acceleration that?s not a leak, I think its air rushing between the divide in the manifold and the divide in the down pipe. I need to find out if new manifolds are available and if not source a good second hand one. Might get a genuine down pipe too if I can. I may even change the whole thing for the stud type fitment like your concidering.

Going to look at my engine mounts too as I think extra engine movement might be making things worse.

I've got a feeling the stud type system was changed to the C Type around '83/84

the car causing the problems is a 90 gti it does have Ernst downpipes. I also have an 84 model on its original system (same joint) and thats fine.I did try the seals in the downpipe before fitting and they appeared to be a perfect fit. Think they may have changed the joint type when the mk1 saloon finished. VW can only supply the later type

VW must have changed the system for a reason, it must be better when its working properly if it superceded the stud type?

So have you changed your C Clips?

Have you changed the rear mount on the box? even try the diesel version as it's harder.

I've changed my front and rear engine mounts but still seem to have a fair bit of movement then taking up drive so i'm suspecting the side mounts now. They have done 140k so are probably shot. I'm going to do them when I next have the cambelt off.
