magnets !!! on my tank

mt filler neck is due for replacement as its fairly rotten,
before i get to do this i need to drive the car for around 100miles,
the car runs totally sweet at the moment, so i dont want to balls it up…

1* are the dangers of rust in the tank less harsh on a carb engine ?
2* is a cleverly placed magnet a way to prevent contamination of the fuel system

You can make a decent pre filter for around ?12 which has the right size inlet and outlet to go before the GTi pump. If it's only small stuff then the main filter will catch it anyway. I was having problems with the pumps seizing due to contamination so invented this one.

You can take the sender unit out from top of tank (under rear seat) and have a magnet on a rod etc to 'probe' in  for rust and remove what you can.

Would advise tank is empty or very minimal amount when you do it! 8O

Not really, since rust isn't magnetic.

May I point out the fundamental problem here…

When your fuel filler neck corrodes it doesn't form an air tight seal anymore.

The splits open and, because it's near the rear wheel arch, water gets kicked up off the rear wheel and gets into the fuel tank.

Water isn't magnetic either!!

get a stainless neck bent up - i went to my local powerflow place very helpful and new exactly what i was looking - i took the old neck with me for a template - i am running a proper aero cap so i won't now have any more contamination worries.

you really need to get the tank out of the car and flush it out - you can either empty the tank and let it dry - give it a good side ways shake and then all the rusty fragments will be central in the tank and then just hoover em out.

on reinstalling my lifter pipes and sender unit i installed a simple plastic inline filter fixed onto the end of the lift device - this works very well as we had done this about 10 years ago when we owned the car previously.

if there is rust in the tank take the tank out - it isn't a massive job - you'll need to drop the axle slightly though…

rusty fragments in your fuel supply will be equally as damaging in a carb car as in an injection version
