How much for fuel pump?

I think I need a new one.  My car seems to have low fuel pressure, is lumpy at idle.  The fuel pump is loud and the drops a few revs at idle when i put the fan on.  Its got to go.  How much am I looking at?

You'll probably find, when you look at it, that you might need to go a bit further than the fuel pump…..

I'd budget for a pump (part number 171 906 091A) - prices see above - the sound absorber for the pump although you could recycle the old one - but a brand newie is only like ?8 (part no 155 201 769) a new accumulator (447 133 441) - about ?80 - the line that links the pump to the accumulator (533 201 220) - about ?25 - and don't bank on getting the old line off that easily: it has been exposed under the car for 20 years…. the damping ring to hold the accumulaor (533 201 533A) and the sealing washers that ensure a clean seal between the accumulator and the pump (N0138128)

So you're probaly looking at ?200 to ?250 all up if you want to go the complete replacement route - which is what I'd do.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a novice but why replace the accumulator and fuels line? Is this to remove debrie that may have built up in the system?

Not the fuel lines -  the connecting line between the fuel pump and the accumulator.  They sit alongside each other.

The system (as i understand it) works like this - turn on the ignition - a lifter pump in the tank primes the fuel pump.  This takes a few seconds and the lifter pump cuts out (on a timer relay hooked up at the fuse box).  The fuel pump provides fuel to the acumulator.  The accumulator ensures there is always pressure in the system which is a return loop.  Fuel (under pressure) is delivered to the injectors where it is consumed by the engine as needed.  Unconsumed fuel is returned to the tank.  

If you are having fuel pressurisation problems (sounds like you are) the problem may be in the pump and / or may be in the accumulator.

My experience is that seperating the fuel pump from the accumulator can be difficult as the fittings are (a) tight and (b) locked in place afetr 20 years of exposure and non-disturbance.

To ensure you contain the problem in a "single hit" and to ensure you can get everything apart and back together again, I would consider replacing the pump, the accumulator and the connector between the two - but it's your call - try just doing the pump and see how you get on.

Thanks mate.  Yes it is an injected vehicle and your explanation of the system is much clearer than that in the Haynes manual.  I need a fuel filler pipe also so will check the bank balance.

If your old fuel filler pipe has rusted, don't forget you'll need to fish any rust out of the tank with a magnet while you're in there replacing the fuel pump.  Apologies if this is blindingly obvious but I learned it the hard way

If you are doing the filler neck (and seal) as well you may as well replace the filter in the engine bay, plus its connector  - the filter is about ?15 and the connector is under a tenner

I have replaced the filter. What is the connector? Is is the pipe from the filter to the fuel distributor?

If you've done the filter then you're sorted under the bonnet.  Now focus on getting your fuel pressure back!
