Get rid of little blow

Since i ever owned the mk1 when put foot down, not fast but as normal driving i have always heard a little farting noise from front end downpipe area, mine is a 1.5 carb, i look after car well, service reguarly etc new exhaust.
So all ok, the only thing that as come to my mind is the original downpipe design, "clamps".
Do these downpipes give that commonly known noise i hear on other mk1 and mk2 golfs, can i get rid of it?
If so would changing to a gti manifold solve this, would a gti manifold fit, and if so can i just replace the exhaust manifold and connect direct to the original mid box etc without any mods?
Thanks
Pete

My exhaust was blowing from the backbox so i recently replaced it and since then i can now hear the 'farting' coming from the front end when the engine is under load, will keep an eye on this thread and see where it goes.

Sorry i'm not much help pete  :dontknow:  :dontknow:

hi pete.

am i right in thinking your engine is a big block originally from an '82 or summat?

gti system should bolt straight on.

are you on about the horrible c clips joiining the manifold to downpipe and blowing from that area? worst design ever

a gti 4 branch should bolt straight onto your head, and join straight up to the remainder of your system.

cheers

Hi john, a 1.5 from an x reg sorry took so long in replying, bad month bud.
So i can use the standard 1.6 gti mani and down pipe, i can get 2nd of course, but can i get hold of new gasket for the join between manifold and downpipe.

Ok enough is enough, want to go for full system, 4 branch etc new setup, i have asked numerous times as regards full setup, what design, willit fit without any mods etc etc and no where, so what do members here recommend for a standard 1.6 block, price guide i am looking at ?300, is this reasonable or am i being cheap, but bear in mind i want it for use as a daily river, no racing etc, and to get rid of the annoying blow from downpipe so nothing ridiculous in price.
Anyone know of a place manchester area NOT AWESOME, who can show me a setup that will fit on mine and fit it also whilst i wait, like i say it is a family car and can not afford to leave it for days whilst they wait for parts blah blah, experienced owners, dont want someone who doesn't give a toss about the car and will treat it as i do, may sound fussy git, but i am sure there are others here who understand what i mean,. specially as alot of other mk1's on here are alot better than mine.
Best wishes
Pete

Had this before and got it again!

I had this problem on my old 1983 GTI Cab…..having a very sensitive ear to noisy exhaust and raspy engines, i set out to sort the problem..

I took the manefold off the engine and saw that over time the exhaust gases had leaked through the gasket, but at such pressure that they had drilled grooves in the manefold.

Replacing the gasket would not be enough, so i sent the manefold to the engineer who skimmed it back flat…

Connected it all up, new gaskets and WOW!!!

My car was now a rocket ship which sounded SHWEET!!!  :D

Just bought a new 1.8 GTI Cab….and got the same issue…

Going to do the same thing as before, but will probably re-new which a nice S/S number soon….

Hope this helps?

Thanks

Darren
