Fueling problems

Hiya all, wonder if you can help me out.
The car stopped the other day and hasn't started since, checked we had spark, checked the fuel pump relay and that works (what number is it just to be sure???)
Emptied the fuel filter out and turned over the engine, but no sudden feed of fuel from the tank. Put a direct power feed on to the fuel pump and all it does is pulse on and off very quickly unless you break the feed and re-connect, then the pump pulses more frequently, slowly pushing fuel into the filter.
Is the pump supposed to run continuously or does it work by pulseing fuel up the lines??
Can't think what else could be causing the issue but for a faulty fuel pump, but the problem is it was brand new 1300 miles ago, so it concerns me that one would die so quickly
Thanks in advance of your help

The pump should run continuously, pumping fuel at (I think) 750ml or more in 30 secs of running. You can test this by disconnecting the fuel feed into the fuel filter on the metering head, rigging up some tubing and feeding/measuring it into an orangeade (or lemoade, etc) bottle. I've worked it out and the maximum the engine would ever need is around 1/4 of that, so there's a bit of leeway for an old pump. Also, fuel pumps when new (and pumping clean fuel) tend to be very quiet compared to older ones.

right, after checking everything thats been suggested and checking the process in both the Porsche 924 and Mk1 Haynes manuals, the fuel pump had to come off.
Even with a direct feed (again) it still didn't run consistantly, so I took it to an auto electrician who said ' its knackered'
Ordered a new bosch one and got to post the old bosch one i have back to the supplier for investigation as to why its failed after 1300 miles, at least this is in warranty unlike my Plasma that blew up this week (3 weeks out of warrenty) and parts aren't available from Hitatchi… what a week
