Fuel Tank Nightmare!!!!!

I stripped all of the foam strips, hoses etc from the fuel tank off my first project and it was my intention to clean it up, paint it then swap it for the one on my new project.

After spending hours cleaning it with a clean and strip disc and wire wheel, i managed to buff a small hole in the bottom of the tank   . It must have been about through already.

Does anybody know what the best way to patch this would be, as I dont fancy going near it with the mig  :scratch:

Get a new tank, good used one (I have them used)

Or you can fibreglass the hole or use one of those kits - or solder it or weld it (scary but easy)

I think fuel tank repair places use nothing more elaborate than steam cleaning the fuel tanks (thoroughly), then welding in the normal way. Going for a decent secondhand one is a sensible option, though.

Thanks for that.  I think that i will remove the other tank and have a look at it.  Do you think that clean and strip discs are a bit too much?  and what about the two pack liquid metal repair stuff?

i welded a bedford cf tank when i was a mechanic aged 17 my boss said it would be ok to weld if it was washed out ok , he washed it out.

he then came out the office with a crash helmit and his full bike leathers for me to wear i thought he was having a laugh until he lowered the 4 poster ramp onto the tank to stop it flying out the workshop

i did weld in the end without any major problems other than the colour of my pants young and stupid in  them days for the sake of a few quid get a good used one
