Fuel Tank 'flushing'

read somewhere the best way to get the 'crud' out of the fuel tank is with a magnet and bit of string, is this true? (obviously only works with metal 'crud' though)

what's the best way to drain the system? I want to make sure there's nothing that's going to end up clogging up the injectors and cause issues + the fuel that's in there (if any) has probably been in there since 2001  :?

any advice would be great

Have a look inside via the sender hole with a torch, mine had load of debris in it.

I took the tank off completely and flushed it repeated with clean petrol. I filtered the dirty petrol and reused it to flush again and again. I had the car in bits and wanted to paint the tank so it was coming off anyway. Remove the plastic strainer from in the tank with a hook via the sender hole on top and the swill it all out. Needless to say I did all this in a well ventilated area and took precautions against sparks and fag smoking mates.

To drain it simply remove the pipe to the pump making sure you have enough containers for all the pertol that will come out.

Cheers for the help… just looks a bit confusing looking at the tank in the haynes manual, looks to me like the guy who designed the fuel line was smoking something at the time 'yeah man, put a pipe there, filter here…. yeah….more pipes, make it wicked crazy man'… or something like that
