Fuel Pump
????'ss later, and now have m.o.t !!!
Fuel pump still making a bad noise, changed the one inside the fuel tank( think this is a sender unit ), but still the car cuts out while driving?? Must be the fuel pump under the car??
Is there a link for changing this part?, 1987 golf cab is the car.
Looked for relay, carn't seem to find it
And last of all, how much are they to buy? the local vw place is very high in there pricing of parts? cost me ?35.00 just for the pump in the tank.
Cheers for any help, in liverpool area t.mora, so if you have one cheap, let me know ( or b.ham area )
Thanks

lol,
Going for a shot in the dark tomorrow… there is a wire going from fuse 19, then its joined straight to the fuel pump wire under stearing wheel ?
I have taken relay out of number ' 2 ' and the pump / car still runs :dontknow: take the wire off the front of fuse 19, pump stops.
What i think is… someone please tell me if im wrong…..because there is a constant feed to the petrol pump and by-passing the relay, its causing problems ?
Hopefully i will save ?? on not getting a new pump.
This is my last problem ( apart from a new roof ! )
Your help is way better than a haynes !!!

I think you and i have the same problem daz, I've changed fuel pump, relay and filter and its still cuts out! This has happened to the 8v and 16v engine that have been in my car (16v is still in) I can't see the problem being electrical to be honest. What i suspect it is, is the supply from the fuel tank to the fuel pump, i've heard the filler neck corrodes and blocks the pipe and is a common problem. Can anyone else verify this?

The problem with changing the fuel pump, filter etc is you're addressing the downstream consequence of contaminated fuel, not the root cause. The worst case scenario is that you could ruin a brand new fuel pump. There's no easy way, but you need to make sure the fuel tank and filler neck aren't rusty and have no rust/dirt in them.

If you have a lift pump - need to know year. It is mounted on the fuel sender - only about ?35 quid new - I can supply one.
You can pull it out and test that it can pump fuel. They make a raket when duff which sounds like the main fuel pump being noisy.
Cheers

Make sure you look/check the lift pump in the tank - fitted to cabs '84 on I think - Is the problem worse with 1/4 tank than full?
Yes thats a sympton of mine!!! (1986 gti btw) Where abouts is the lift pump? is it easily accessed?

Removed direct wire to fuel pump, fitted loose one under car back to fuel pump ( original wire i think ) fitted new fuel pump relay and HEY !! Car started, no noise from fuel pump at all !!
Car drove for 5 mins, started loosing revs, around 500/600 got back home… car cut out on drive
Just turns over now, does not start now.
