Fuel Pump Woes?

Hello all.

Got up this morning to go to work and i think my fuel pump has packed in. Usually when you turn the ignition key you hear a "whirring" noise as the back of the car - i presume this is priming the system - but it is silent.
I tried bump starting it to no avail, so i`m waiting for the RAC to come out now. Are there a couple of pumps on an injected 1983 1.8 Gti? And i`ve done a quick search on the web, and they seem to be ?80! Is this right? Any help will be greatly received  :(

hi can you still here the pump relay come on then off, u may need to crank the engine but there should be a relay normally top left of the fuse box on an 1.8l and second hole across, this may have failed, so check it clicks on then off before you order a pump, and yes ?80 is around the mark, i've been told euro do 1 for ?35 but its not bosch.

can`t hear anything when the ignition is switched on. Usually hear a quiet "buzz" sound for 2  seconds, from the rear passanger side then this stops and then i can start the car.
What amp is the relay? Is there any fuses too i should be checking?
I will have a quick poke around the relays - and see if i can  suss it….

should be a fuse mounted on top of the relay, worth checking that out

quick way to know if it's a wiring fault or the pump is to remove the live and earth from the pump, stick a multimeter on it then try starting the car and see what voltage your getting (should be 12v but when the engines turning expect a bit less.. IIRC around 8-9v).. if you get nothing, then it'll be the relay, fuse or wiring at fault (which is nice and cheap)

brought my fuel pump from VW last year and it was ?89

Bozlem,

I have relays if you need one.

make sure you get the correct one - early cars like Phill's has the fuse on top of the relay and later ones don't - they are not intercheangeable.

Ah.. didn't know the later relay's don't have the fuse

there's so many subtle changes between the earlier and later series 2's… never mind series 1's  8O
