Fuel pump relay

Eh up everybody, I think my fuel pump relay has gone. Just got a new fuel pump mine shot itself last week, pump works fine. When the old one went it blew the fuse so I've changed the fuse and pump but she just turns over without firing up. Could the relay have blown and if so is there any way to test them.
Cheers Stu :banghead:

pull the relay out (number 2) and wrap some wire between the two big copper terminal (in effect forcing the relay on) and plug it in

If the fuel pump starts up then there is a problem with your realy.

This is quite a dangerous procedure, in effect your shorting the fuel pump into continious mode via a live feed, better if you could fuse the 'wire' before attempting it.

No, in effect you are manualy closing the contacts of the relay.

The fuel pump fuse will still be in line.

Is the 15A fuse not after the relay ?

where ever it is, you are not by passing it.. it will still be between the fuel pump and the battery where it needs to be.

When the relay energiges, it closes the contact between the two large terminals on the relay so the power can flow from battery to the fuel pump via the fuse.

by bridging the two large terminal on the relay, you are by passing the switching off the relay, nothing else.

In this senario the power will flow from battery, through the bridge, through the fuse, and into the pump.

Trust me its perfectly safe. All you are doing is simulating the relay being on.

Obviously you cant keep it like this as the pump will remain running even tho the car isnt on.. but to test to see if your relay is the problem, this is the way to do it.

I have done it myself as the fuel pump relays went in my 3 mk1s at pretty much the same time.

As with all things MK1 I put the new pump on and nothing happened so did some fidling put it all back together and now its fine. I made up a 10 foot lead with a toggle switch in it so i can lay under her and turn her on and off (the petrol pump) you now what I mean. to check for leaks or bad connections, saves a load of messing about. Now hopefully can take her for a full house of paint  and a couple of new back arches.

I agree with Amit,

My F.P. Relay failed after being flooded with a water  leak from the scuttle, i shorted the 2 large terminals and hey presto it worked.

I made a simple 2-way (on-off) switch at work and now it is like a D.I.Y. immobolisor on my golf. switch on - the fuel pump goes, switch off - rururururu!!

I'm all for a quick fix but that means if you end up in a field on the roof even if the engine cuts out your fuel pump will keep running, filling the car with juice and you'll go up like a keeeebab. I used to run a motorbike with full race slicks on ace in the dry you can guess the rest. You pay your money you take your chance :?

Yeah what I said above was just as a quick test to see if the relay was knackered.
