fuel pump relay

my pump does not prime (83 gti) and i've heard this is to do with the relay type. if i'm too quick starting and it doesn't catch properly, i have to sit and turn her over for ever before she fire up. i assume that the correct relay should solve this, but i'm curious. would different relays have any affect on the fuel delivery?

I am interested in this too..

I have had three relays die in the last week.. and wanted to replace them with a flick switch to keep my going.

The original relay fitted in my gti would only prime once winding the starter over, when that eventually died I got a replacement from GSF and it primes for 1 second as soon as the ignition is switched on and thus fires straight away.

could an incorrect/faulty relay supply an incorrect current and affect pump pressure?

Not really, its basically a switch..its either on or off. WhenI had the old style relay I never had a starting issue, is it hard starting all the time or when she's warm/hot?

mostly when up hill. if she doesn't catch first go, then it's ages turning over until she put puts back to life.

Could be the non return valve(check valve) fitted in the outlet end of the electric fuel pump or the accumulator, I'd be suspicious of the non return valve allowing the fuel to flow back to tank.

was going to get at it tomorrow and check the filter. any advice as to what/how to look for/check would be great.
