fuel pump questions
Hi,
I have a 1983 1.8 8v gti and there doesn't seem to be any fuel reaching the engine.
The fuel pump buzzed all the time then it started buzzing and squealing and now it just clicks when power is supplied to it then gets really hot and takes ages to cool down.
Do fuel pumps get hot?
Do they buzz all the time?
Thanks

There's apparently 3 types of Fuel relay (according to memory)
I've had experiences of 2 of them, when you turn your key to the ignition on possition your fuel pump should either prime "contant buzzing" or prime for 2 seconds "two short buzz's".
You should check your relay before you rule it down to be the fuel pump.

Checked the relay before. The relay buzzes like mad.

The relay isn't meant to buzz at all, it's only an elecrical current passing through a wire.
If you remove the relay and run a wire between the two main prong of the relay, your fuel pump should run and you can then decide on what's wrong.
BUT: It's not advisable that you drive your car like this because if you crash, the fuel will still run, and you might catch a slight case of death.

I wouldn't know mate, I've never had to touch mine after it's been running, someone on here may well know though.

It shouldn't get hot as it's cooled by the fuel passing through it.

fuel pump questions
so… where did we leave off?
I've changed the fuel pump,
made sure all the pipes are not blocked,
made sure the pump is getting full of fuel,
bypassed the relay using a wire and 2 spade ends
and still no fuel getting to the engine.
The fuel pump doesn't buzz any more but it gets very hot. there is a feed of 12v getting to it as i checked with a multi meter.
one of the fuel pumps squeels and buzzes but no fuel gets pumped through the pipes to the engine.
Has any one else has this problem. I need to get her running

Have you checked that fuel runs out of the pipe from the tank into the pump?

I've just taken the bolt of the fuel pump that hold the metal pipe on between the wires. I then turned the fuel pump on and all it did was continue to trickle out. If the fuel pump worked wouldn't it spray it out under high pressure?
Thanks
