Could be a number of things, have you be paying about with anything prior to it going wrong?

It might be the relay is faulty , try [and i do this as mine doesn't always self prime] flicking the ignition on off a few times until you hear that 2 second whirl .

ok will try that i can hear the relay click on the first turn of ignition

btw the only thing i had a prob with the fuel side is the the wires came out the cold start plug which is now sorted but b4 i repaired the wire the pump still never used to prime but started quiker then now but a few times it had flooded casue it to misfire which i think it was to do with the cold start not connected

OK - as I understand it the system works like this (fuel injection)  - open ignition circuit, this trips a relay that opens a circuit to the lifter pump (installed in tank) The lifter pump primes the fuel pump.  The system is pressurised by an accumulator - fuel is delivered under pressure &  consumed by the engine. Any unconsumed fuel is returned to the tank.

The relay  that activates the lifter pump is timed  - enables the lifter pump to run for a couple of seconds only - ie lifter does little work throughout its life.

So start at the relay - no luck - migrate to the lifter pump (there is a detailed post on how to access this complete with photos)  It may be the filter to the lifter (if fitted - some had a filter, some not) is clogged - or it may be a failed lifter  - although I doubt it.

I obtained a new lifter pump from VAG a short while ago - ie still available.  [Now  safe and sound in its VAG box in my spares locker …]

Hope this helps

No lifter pump on tin top GTI models . Got to be the relay .
