Nah - if the gauge is broke then you're best off taking the instrument cluster to bits and swapping that part I reckon. Don't know if you've ever had a cluster in bits, but it's all 'modular' really - you can replace the speedo part, tacho part, fuel gauge part, etc, seperately. I reckon the problem is more likely to be in the wiring though (?), as there really isn't that much to go wrong with the gauge.
I could sort you out a gauge and a tank sender to try, both of which I know work fine if you want to give that a go, but I'd check the wiring first (inc. the circuit board on the back of the instrument panel and plug that attaches to tank sender)
Cheers,
Mark

d

yeah i guess so, well my first point of call is to check the volts passing from the wires first then see what happens when i put a full tank in.

might see you this sunday at teh gaydon motor heritage centre

You can get at the sender from the access port under the back seats. unscrew this and you can remove the sender from the tank. The plug might not have been reconnected properly. Only takes 2 ins to whip the rear seats out.
