Fuel flowing out my Mk1 Cabby

good evening all,

jus a quicky. my car has been off the road for the past two weeks to undergo some much needed running repairs (the electrical gremlins   ).

Anyway to cut a long story short its now running again and i needed to fill up my petrolium, so without further adoo i went to tesco's to fill up. I put 38litres in the car (trying to squeeze as much in as poss. i then drove about a mile down the road to halfords to buy some new mats and when i returned to the car i could smell petrol and when i looked underneath i could see a steady stream of petrol pouring out from the centre near the fuel tank from a pipe that appears to go no where!

After about 5mins it stopped, but i now appear to only have a 2/3 to 3/4 of a tank left. as i say it appears to have stopped now, and it may appear a dumb q but does anyone know what this may be???????

sounds like it is the top of the fuel tank leaking where the fuel sender unit is fitted.  this can be accessed by lifting up the back seats and unscrewing the black cover (3 screws)

these senders are readily available and should solve the problem.  :D

Have you tried spraying a little WD40 round it, leave it for a while and try again ????

Tis a cunning plan!  The missus has nicked the car for the weekend so can't have a go until one evening this week.  May end up taking it to my local VW specialist as there are a few dents on the cover now and I don't want to knacker it.

I have problems removing my sender unit - ended up breaking it as I forced it off!

Had to super-glue it when I put it back on as a tempory fix, until I come across a good 2nd hand one.

Do you mean the pipe that hangs over the centre rear of the tank - should have a bell-shaped bit of rubber on the end. Have a look at this thread sounds like a similar problem.
