fuel economy?

What sort of fuel economy are you guys getting in your Mk1 Gti VW's, i.e 1800's & 1600's?

I know you dont buy a car like this for good fuel economy, but i need to know how it going to be on fuel.

 8O Thats much better than i would have expected from an old car! 30-43mpg ish i think that is.

220 is pretty much spot on for my old GTi, this was driving in "eco" mode though!
I'm now mk1less, ahhhhhhh!

Just completed a check over 6 weeks in the Clipper (Automatic - 1800) over nearly 1000 miles and got 37.8 mpg !!!!! Includes short runs, long runs, town, motorway and booting it from traffic lights……
Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

1989 Mk1 Clipper 1.8 automatic - Sadly now up for sale - medical issues dictate)

1999 (Nov) Passat S Saloon 1.9 TDI (AFN) - TUG 1 (Remap by CCC ( - **** …..change pants !!) with cruise control

2000 (Mar) Passat Sport Estate 1.9 TDI (ATJ) 5 speed automatic with Tiptronic - TUG 2 (Remap and cruise control by CCC)

Ihis is where the fiar 126 comes in to its own . With its 60 mpg it cant be beet

Did you know that Des O'Connor drives a Fiat 126? Apparently he gets good mpg out of it too….probably on his way to Tan-tastic.



I get about 30-35 mpg on a good motorway run in my golf.

32mpg, when i have to use crap fuel (tesco 95 ron). I get about 35 to 36 out of decent high octane fuel (97-99 ron). Not bad i think for and old girl (1.8 GTi)

i get between 35-50 a gallon. averaging about 43/4 miles/gallon

Best i've ever got was 450 miles out of a tank (driving eco-style on motorways and longer runs - i.e. didn't go above indicated 80mph).

Usually around 260 - 300 miles per tank using it for a mixture of driving.

When I used to have a 1300 Driver as a daily car its MPG was probably about the same as the GTI, average @35 with 40+ on long runs and <30 in winter on short town centre trips.

Proves how good the GTI is when you consider the performance difference

S1's have 50 litre tanks and s2's have a 45 litre tank - I think!!

I had a red 126 BIS as my first car in 2000…it was a free hand-me-down! Never see them anymore though (mine died and got scrapped, R.I.P 'Fid')
P.S - 60mpg can be beat…by my Golf  :lol:

P.S - Yes, tanks are 45 litres according to Haynes.

Think caddy and tin tops tanks were different. mine takes 37 quid top to bottom
