m7r,

I had only slight signs of rust bubbling just on the inside of the filler neck. so decided to replace and when off was extremly glad I did. After removing all the dirt, light tapping with a screw drive showed a number of area that just went straight through.

was extremly suprized how much dirt was lodged in there.

DJheap22, It was worse than that 8O

For a start the bit that the small plastic breather pipe fits to came off when the jubilee clip was disturbed.

When the pipe was removed the end that fits to body almost totally disintegrated under finger pressure. If you can see any rust bubbles or stains on the inside I'd change it.

Stick your head up in the wheel arch and clean all the mud off. If the filler is solid and just has a bit of surface rust clean it up again, paint and underseal it.

My cabriolet had a new filler fitted by the previous owner but the garage that did it sandwhiched a load of mud and grot between it and the rear quarter. I took it off, cleaned it and the wheel arch, painted it, refitted it and sprayed underseal all around up there to proctect from any future rust. I also pays to occasionally stick the hosepipe up there when washing the car to blast out any build up of mud.
