Filler cap won't unlock!

The central locking stopped working on my sister's Golf (day or 2 ago) - doors lock/unlock manually ok but last night another problem reared it's
ugly head. Damn fuel filler cap remains locked so we can't get at it to fuel it!

Desperately urgent - Car sat outside my house devoid of gasoline!

Is this a Mk1, or are you talking about the flap which covers the Mk2's filler cap?

If it's the flap, there may be a way of releasing the locking pin from within the boot - there is a section in my Audi 80 owners manual about this, so you might check yours (or ask a knowledgeable dealer).

If it's the Mk1 fuel cap, your best bet might be a locksmith or AA guy - they look tricky to open without damaging the car-body or filler neck.
