Exhaust Broke :( Help!

Drove to my mot garage to have a chat about some business between us, got that all sorted out :), started the car up and it sounds really noisey, but i thought it wasnt the car but the garage..

anyway i drove away and then realised upon winding the windows down that it was WAY to loud.. anyway i pull over, check under the car and a part of the exhaust looks kinda like a spring and one of the coils has become disattached from the rest.

You can just about see it here:

Looks like the corrugated flexi-pipe at the front of the system has blown. You should be able to get a new one for not much from GSF or Euro Car Parts.

Thanks Markwon,

checked GSF, the onyl bits they list under the MK1 Golf are:

 21336      CORRUGATED PIPE      G1 1.1 & 1.3 8/79 >12/83      11.25
and
 21322      MANIFOLD PIPE-FLEXIBLE      G1 1.1 & 1.3 8/79 >12/83      9.85

These are the only two that list your description, but i have a gti.. is that a problem?

Hmmm… just checked VW parts list and as you say only 1.1-1.3 have such a pipe (it's called a corrugated pipe). Maybe as yours was converted from a C (usually 1.1) they reused a bit of the old exhaust. Or is it a stock system at all or a full aftermarket/performance system? Think you can get lengths of corrugated pipe from most exhaust centres.

1.1 system

1.8

Yeh this further confirms the fact that it was a Golf C and that it had a Golf 1.6 or 1.8 put in it.

I've got the engine number, im going to contact VW on monday and find out what engine it is for sure.

Cost me ?20 for the corregated flexi pipe, new rubbers and securing things & labour :)

Markwon,

Great diagrams, I hadn't been to www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk before excellent site and excelent prices.

As it happens I discovered yesterday that I need a new centre connecting pipe for my 1.1 and was concerned it would be difficult/expensive to get - it's ?15 at bodyshop but ?13 Delivery hurts as I run my car on a shoestring (4th car !).

Rang my local exhaust place who said no problem ?15 fitted, they also suggested ringing the local Partco (often listed as Unipart) who are their supplier - wish I'd known when I was picking up bits for a service in there yesterday.

Oh well.

Glad to hear you got sorted procalx.

I'd be tempted to get the proper exhaust system for the 1.8 (by the way, the back box is different for 1.8GTI than 1.6GTI). The reason is, its larger diameter. Its not just about the performance, too much restriction will mean that you will be mixing exhaust and inlet gases at high rpm, which will also affect the stoichiometric ratio during running - basically you'd be on the rich side.

Also, engine mounts if worn, allow the engine to move around too much and the poor old exhaust system usually suffers the most when this happens. Oh, and you lose traction.

As Paul says you would be best running the right exhaust system. Thinking about you should have the right down pipe as 1.1 wouldn't fit :?

I suspect its one of those things which is forgotten about when doing the conversion from small-block to injection big block. From memory, the list is:

Engine
Transmission
Fuel system inc pump, accumulator, twin fuel lines, metering head, fuel tank, etc etc
Front brakes and hubs
Wheels and tyres
Complete exhaust system
Radiator
Battery
Dashboard
Gear knob and gaiter

The 1.1 exhaust would have been way too small, plus I think the joints are in different positions. Some one would have had to cut pipes and use reducers etc.

You should be able to tell if it had been bodged…
