does it really need replacing??

hi first off i know there are loads of threads on this but just want to know if its worth replacing my fuel tank or not.

i am thinking of replacing the fuel tank on my cabby, my old one is already off and isnt that bad there was debris in it and a small rust puddle about 100mm in diameter  right underneath the lift pump opening which after flushing has cleaned up ok and with a bit of scrubbing will probably completely go, is it worth the time scrubbing it or will that area just rust again quickly, new tanks are pricey but i have read a few threads about people doing a proper cleaning job but they still had trouble with tiny parts getting into the system what do u recommend?????

If thats all thats wrong with it and you can get at it I would clean the rust off and paint a bit of the resin they put in motorbike tanks over it. I took the tank off mine and turned it upside down and shook it until all of the bits came out, that was 10 yrs ago and I've had no trouble.

No you don't need to change it - why am I saying that

The tank itself should not be too rusty inside as it has fuel in it and is not exposed. Its the filler neck that rusts from the outside and lets the rust into the tank. Other debris will come from dirty fuel (I had this problem). You can flush the tank out fairly well if you remove it. If you are still concerned you can seal it inside with products from Frosts.
