different mk1 fuel tanks
My gti fuel tank was leaking fuel so i got hold of a D shaped one for the wheel well. Now have changed my mind again, want to keep it user friendly as a daily runner so have got a nearly new tank off ebay for a mk1 cabriolet.Problem I have it all looks very different inside the tank where the sender sits and new tank didnt come with one. Can anybody set me straight about how or if this will fit my hard top 82 gti. Thanks

cabby tank wont fit you need the tintop one im afraid mate
i tried a tintop one in a cabby and it didnt fit so im afraid you still need a tank
the cabby tank has an internaql pump which the gti doesnt have plus its a different shape i think
try crazyquiff on here

There's 3 varitations of fuel tank, ignoring detail differences on very early (swallowtail) tanks:
non-fuel injection up to 1986 approx
fuel injection up to 1986 approx
1986 and on (carb and FI are the same)
Sounds like you have a 1986-on tank. It lacks clarity saying its a "cabby" tank because cabbys were available from 1979 and with all 3! Of course, the most plentiful are probably 86 on or whatever so that's why its been described as such. Basically, it won't fit, not without a degree of modification etc. I guess it could be made to fit but as I understand things, the later ones bolt on and the earlier, are secured with straps, so you're making a lot of work for yourself.
If misdescribed, might be worth returning to seller. If bought in error, sell on and purchase correct spec tank.

Never have a lot of luck with ebay! The D shaped tank is as old as the hills. Looked good on the phone camera pic! The cap was a bit naff so I rang up the company that made it and they said it was donkeys years old,no chance of getting a new cap.The desciption on ebay said "made to fit me cossie"How far do cosworth go back? Thanks for all the advice,I will take the old one off and compare the two.
