Desperate for help. Mk1 MOT failure!!

Right I finally got round to putting my 1977 mk1 Scirocco in for its MOT today and as you've probably guessed it's failed. This is technically a mk1 golf in terms of parts as it uses the same chassis!

There's a few little things that are easily rectified and a few bits of welding that need doing.

But my main concern is "rear axle fouling the fuel tank, suspension has inadequate clearance with the chassis"

As the car was originally a carb engine converted to a GTi engine we've come to the conclusion that either a new fuel tank has been fitted incorrectly or the rear axle isn't right.

He has said that the suspension seems too short, but when all the weight was put on the axle the problem was still there so it can't be the suspension.

So does anyone know whether a Scirocco mk1 has a different fuel tank being either injection or carb??? Or is the axle different??

Hopefully a new rear beam should sort it!!!

Any help appreciated!!

or is anyone breakinga mk1 Golf and has either a fuel tank or axle???

I fitted a GTi tank to my MK1. In the area next to the crossbeam of the axle, the carb and injection tanks are identical. Mine looks like it will hit every time the axle goes upto the bumpstops, but it doesn't. There's only 30-40mm of clearance when the beam is hanging from the car. I've never tried to get my fingers through the gap when it's been sat on the floor.

are you saying you fitted a GTi tank to a mk1 scirocco??

On mine the tank actually touches the rear beam! This as advised by the MOT is a major safety problem.

The car has apparently been lowered and the mOT tester saidthe shocks are the wrong height. but surely the shock height wouldn't affect the fuel tank touching the rear beam??

Something is not right - Sounds like your tank has not been fitted correctly...

Sounds stupid i know but its not a  gti tank from a cab cause their bigger than a standard tintop tank , dont know if the cabby tank will fit a mk1 rocco. :dontknow: i could check on etka for you .

I've had mine in the air this morning, doing the wheel bearings, and the beam does come really close to, if not touching, the tank straps. The tank has has been in and out a few times, but I believe it's in the right position.
