Carbs

Webers or bike carbs? I don't like injection, carbs are far better in my opinion but which should I fit. Webers are the easy route but everyone fits them, I want something a bit different like bike carbs. I've tried reading up on the conversion but can't find much info on it. If needs be I can make my own manifold for both types so thats not a problem. Bike carbs are smaller and cheaper and would probably sit better in the engine bay, but webers are tried and tested… its a tough one

What are peoples general opinion, and have you got any info that might be useful?

depends what engine you have ?

Bike carbs from a 1300 bike will be fine on a 1300 engine or less but will not work on say an 1800 . Thats why webers are fitted .

Its an 1800 gti. So if bike carbs won't work, whats involved in fitting webers? I know how to fit the carbs etc, but how do I actually convert from injection to carbs, do I need a new dizzy etc from a carb'd engine?

You simply rip out all injection system pay about ?1000 for all the carb set up and off you go .

Google for stockists or buy GOLF+ and ring a few of the advertizers for prices and advice .

I'd guess that you'd need to change the fuel pump, tank, and possibly the fuel  lines (don't think you'd need a return line, and the supply would probably be a different length). I don't think you'd need a new distributor though.

You'd then need to tune the carbs up - I assume you'd run with 2, so you'd need them to match also, which can be a faff. It's all very possible, but you may end up paying a lot for some expertise, or waiting a long time until you've done it yourself and are happy with the setup.

If you decide to go down this route, the injection parts are all very valuable second hand, so don't throw them away! (Just in case you didn't already know…)

I know all I need to know about the carb and fueling side of things, I've had plenty of webers before, but its just the ignition that I wanted to make sure of.

And nothing will get thrown away ;)

you will to make a heat soak plate to sit between the manifold and the carbs. and there is not a lot of room for air filtering  - and inhaling hot air from the exhaust is another negative on an 8v carb conversion.

I think you'd need a FSE fuel vale jobbie
