car refuses to do over 60 in third

recently the car has been getting up to about 60-65 in third and literally just losing all power (with foot flat on the floor) until it gets back to 50mph. If i change into 4th gear, it sorts itself up to about seventy or so, bu then the same thing.

I know its fuel related, but there is not any rust in the tank, its not HT leads, distributor etc (these were replaced less than 400 miles ago) but i need to know if this is because there is the possibility something is stuck in the tank?

It only does this every so often as well, for example, i just changed the in line fuel filter and it did not do it, but im pretty sure if i take it out tomorrow, the same thing will happen.

If it is something caught in the tank, can i get at it from under the seat where the fuel lines start?

Any help appreciated
Alex

Your best bet will be to try prowlers injector test

When you have done this post back your findings and we can take it from there.

Also timing might be out (could have slipped a tooth) so check that too.

Also check the throttle cable is actually opening the butterflies in the throttle body fully.

Seen this before , turns out fuel starvation to blame [but may be wrong in your case], you need to look at the fuel tank breather arrangement and gravity valve , located in the inner arch . Also fuel pump and tank filter .

careful now thats abit mean 1.5's are quite nippy.

have a look at the breather on the tank and the fuel cap it sounds like fuel starvation to me but not blocked more like vacuum build up.

Not saying they arent "nippy", but it might be expecting a bit much of an older carb car to deliver any more than its potential in 3rd gear at that speed, it just dont sound viable :dontknow:  if it has done higher speed before in that gear?  then maybe its not happy doing it!!!

my VR6 only does 110 mph in 3rd………it gets there quick though

thanks for the advice people,

the car is pretty fast actually like novocaine said, and though i dont push it like this very often, it definitely used to have no problem going this speed in third and then going on to crack 105 mph, that vr6 sounds mental! i want one so much

i will have a look at the weekend anyways

Sounds like a four speed, third gear will be somewhat longer than in a 5 speed. My 4 speed 1.1 will do 60 mph in 3rd, mind you my 5 speed 1.6 GTI will pull 75mph in 3rd. What rpm are you losing speed at, what happens at that rpm in 2nd gear?

Cheers

im losing speed at approx 4000-4200 rpm, then the revs fall accordingly with the speed, but in 2nd gear it is fine, doesnt do it atall, even with higher revs, only with third :dontknow:
