broke down right near my house

good evening all,
ok, golf has been sorn for the last 4 months, 1st day out (new years day) and yes. why on earth did i get her sorn in  the first place i'll never know any way back to the point.

she cut out yesterday and then i restarted ok 10 min after :dontknow:

today same thing but without the  10 min later scenario.

did a test spraying carb cleaner in the ….. i think it the air flow sensor near just near the fuel distributer????

anyway started off the button, so i am pointing towards the fuel pump.

tried gentle tapping pump with hammer for encouragement to no avail.

any advice

I'm assuming its fuel injection. I reckon its rust/dirt in the fuel system. Does the pump squeal (or increase in volume) when it cuts out? There's also a remote chance that its the WUR, coupled with poorly adjusted mixture, and that once its started/warming up, the faulty WUR/badly adjusted mixture puts you into the lean/rich misfire limit.

I have a little loom which connects to the 5th injector and battery, with a switch, so I can keep an engine running and diagnose/adjust it, even if the mixture is well out. If its too lean, normally keeping your foot on the throttle can keep it running.

how do you reckon its rust in the fuel?
no squealing, in fact i dont think the fuel pump primes on half turn of ignition either
the car has been sitting for for months and was running fine then

after i got a tow home i started the car again  and i fired then died strait away.

i want to do a fuel delivery test by disconecting the fuel line infront of the filter in the engine bay

the testing loom youhave… are theyexpensive? where can i get one?

I made it myself, its very easy, its just a connector to the battery, a switch, and a plug which fits onto the 5th injector.

but would my car cut out in motion if the mixture was out and/or the WUR wasfaulty?

Yes, if the air-fuel ratio (mixture) goes below the rich misfire limit or above the lean misfire limit, it will not run. It might be that this only occurs during load, ie when driving the car not idling while stationary.

Its also possible its a loose connection on the ignition side, or another (wiring) issue.

ok, going down the wiring avenue…..

sometimes when i half turn the key (started some 6 months ago leading up to this problem and currently more so) the rev counter needle bounces off 0 to upto sometime 4-5k before going back down.

this didnt happen in my first 5 years or so of owning this car, does this reveal any potential faults i.e. ignition?

I reckon that one's a faulty earth, but I'm not 100% sure there…

i've been back and turned her over off the button again and she fired up and then cut out after five seconds.

after trying over a few times the running time became less.

then the turning over struggled and the interior light started dimming.

gotta get her fixed by next thursday cause i gotta pick family up from heatrow airport :oops:

gonna contact a gargage tommorow. if i know for sure its the fuel pump i can fit on my self and save the money and feel good

the garage sorted it in the end.

so annoying cause they wanted just over ?100 for it.

all it was was the inners of the fuel pump relay had corroded and needed soldering!!!

if only i had the time. this was two days before i became a father.

why is it in life that there  are times when it seems like nothing happens at all and then all of a sudden everything happens at once :dontknow:

none the less i am a lot happier bunny now, car works and we have a beautiful baby daughter
