Blowing from exhaust manifold

My exhaust manifold keeps going, I've had this repaired now loads of times and it keeps coming back after a few months. All the rubbers are fitted to restrict the movement so does anyone have ideas why this keeps happenin?

eh-up EV, I presume you mean the manifold to downpipe? Are all 6 studs intact or have some been broken off in the past? Mine had a very badly fitting pattern downpipe originally which I swapped for an Ernst(?) one that fitted better. I've had to re-hang my exhaust a few times to get it to fit OK without undue pressure or mis-alignment.

Ye thats the one manifold to downpipe. I'll get it checked over but I can remember one mickyanic sayin there was a stud missing so I presumed he fixed it.

If there's a stud missing, you can simply put an M10 bolt in there instead, so it should be a non-issue. I can only really think that the exhaust is being fitted improperly and is putting stress on the joint, which causes it to crack/leak. The middle section is difficult to fit on the Mk1 Golf because at the front its in the centre and at the rear (just before the silencer) its at the left. So it twists the system and doesn't hang naturally.

You might (or your mickyanic) have fun trying to remove the broken stud. I did one off the car and welded a nut to the remains of the stud and that snapped. Tried again after getting everything cherry red with a gas axe and that failed and eventually had to drill and retap, not too difficult at my mates engineering workshop.

The second time it was on the car and involved drilling it out from underneath… whilst laid on a concrete floor…. not nice. People complain about the later c-clips, they don't know how lucky they are….

Ev, are the engine mounts OK? If the two side ones are worn or the lower gearbox one broken the engine will move around too much and make the exhaust fail.

Engine mounts, never thought of that one. They must be warn out. I'll get someone to look at that
