attatching exhaust

hi people. i have the "dome" shaped exhaust that i am trying to refit to the manifold,
first question is, do i need to put any exhaust sealent between the 2 halves before they go together,
second question is, is there some sort of tooling to prize the clips open so tha they will hold the 2 flanges together? because they are a bit bloody stiff to put on by hand

thanks in advance

Clever paul posted the above  ………You may need a new gasket .

i have tried everything tonight to get the clamps on, i have manages to get one clamp on, but the other side is just well off, im talking nearly and inch, and ther is no way i am going to get the clamp over that gap, do you think it would be possible to get a normal exhaust clamp that clamps the back box etc, and just tighten this up around the manifold

granted it wont be the correct clamp for it, but surely if i tighten it up enough it should do the joc shouldnt it? of any other ideas you people have??

thanks in advance!

Have you done it? do you have the clamp tool, it is easy, but not on your tod thou, easy way, fit the one on the same side as cambelt 1st, then get someone to hold the exhaust in place up tightly to the manifold, use an exstension bar and from underneath stretch the clamp as much as possible, it will go on bud, because your doing on your own your having no luck, done this numerous times and best having someone to hold the downpipe in place as you work, also like suggested whilst your at it replace the gasket, it is a tightly packed wire ring.
Here's a pic of one when i changed mine, original was falling apart a little, had an hole, but whilst i did this thought i'd change the exhaust manifold gaskets, bolts and studs to stop the rust happening again on the studs, whilst i was at it

I don't understant why you've not done it, unless you've somehow mis-seated the 2 parts of the exhaust. With using an exhaust clamp to open up the C clamp, there's loads of room to place them on, etc. Its just tedious tightening it up using the small 13mm spanner.

well i have done it now, but i used a different clamp for one of the sides, i did however put the one on closest to the gearbox first, maybe thats why i was struggling, but seriously, i stretch the other one to full capacity and it was still a mile off, i did get someone to help me but still to no avail, hopefully my "manufactured" clamp will hold and everything will be dandy, if not il be re-doing it pedders way

thanks guys
