I run my 1800 GTI to and from work, an 11 mile journey one way. On the way to Blackburn from Preston I get around 34-35mpg and on the way home I get between 39.9 to 43.5mpg. The traffic conditions are a little heavier and I am going into the hills on the way up to Blackburn so maybe thats what give the differences.
General run-around mpg is about 36-38.
By the way, on a sub topic… I zeroed my trip meter on the speedo and on the MFA. After 444 miles on the speedo the MFA read 437. Which is more likely to be correct? Is the difference due to the mechanics in the speedo cogs?

Mine drops below 30 when I push it, but 35-38 on a long run is normal.
(Less than 10mpg on a trackday though!)
Cheers,
Drew.

Assuming that you have the correct circumference tyres, and the right speedo cable drive cog (different sizes to suit different final drive gearbox ratios, with different colurs to indicate each one), I'd reckon that the mechanical one would be more accurate than the MFA one.

What are the stats on your BHP/torque. What sort of performance do you get in return for 17 mpg?
