1300 mk2 engine ??4star/lrp???

hey there peeps,
got told that i could put four star in my mk1 golf,  got told it would run ok and would do it good rather then harm. is this true??
it has got the mk2 1300 (hk engine code) in it. is it worth me puting 4star in every now and again, and can you mix 4 star with unleaded or optimax?

I dont think it would do any harm, cos i did it with my driver for a while (its got the gf engine though), but then I found out that no VAG cars made after 1976 needed lrp! :roll:   So I think the the only difference you'd notice with lrp is in your pocket!

what help would it do it, ??as it has lead in it would it hjelp lubricate stuff or what?

All Golfs from 1974 can run on unleaded (standard 95 ron for carb models and 98 ron super unleaded for GTI's and Formel E). Engines with iron heads needed leaded petrol to protect the valve seats. Golf's have aluminium heads with hardened valve seats so no point in filling up with LRP every so often. Have to say I didn't realise anywhere was still selling LRP.

I'd imagine mixing LRP, unleaded and optimax would mainly effect the octane rating. Most LRP is 97-98 ron, optimax and other super unleadeds 97-99 ron and standard unleaded 95 ron. Your HK engine will require no more than 95 ron.

just stick to normal unleaded it is then,

No, only if you use a petrol with a octane rating lower than is recommended for your engine - higher octane than required should cause no probs. The octane rating relates to efficiency/effectiveness of the burn - the higher the better.

GTI engines e.t.c are normally set up to require high octane fuel (originally 4 star, then LRP/Super unleaded) of at least 98ron. Lower octane petrol can cause 'pinking' and ultimately cause damage unless the timing is adjusted to suit. HK and other small block engines (bar Formel E spec) will not require anymore than 95ron octane (standard unleaded). Using higher octane will not cause any harm and you may notice slightly better economy/performance.
