1.6 GTi Fuel pump test

Hi,

Just a quick question - if I connect my fuel pump direct to the car battery, should the pump turn over?

Also, is this a bad idea?

Apologies in advance if these are really dumb questions!!!

Thanks

Rich

Yes - Should spin constantly. Put an inline fuse in the line from the battery just in case. Rather fry a 20p fuse than an ?80 Pump!

You did mean to do this as a test to see if it is working, yes?

Same problem

Hey guys i need to test mine too./

the car was fine a couple of weeks ago then i let my mate drive it, the ACC pedal got stuck and the car decided to red line the crap out of itsself.

he dropped it into neutral and the we switched teh car off immediately, i hadnt started the car since today.

the battery was flat so i took it back to euro and thay said it was dead, so he replaced it. as it was only acouple of months old. then i went to GSF and got a fuel pump relay for ?17.35.

now ive checked the compressions and number four 4 3 2 1
is at around 100 and the others are fine., but there is no fuel gettin to the engine for some reason

there is spark,

when i turn the car i can hear a strong click from under the car, which is the fuel pump, cant hear a buzz, but then again, not sure if there is enough fuel.

so my question is whats the best solution, does the pump not buzz if there is no fuel.? or is it stuck or sumink/…

follow the instructions in prowler's injection test and youll end up with a switch instead of the relay for testing.  You should be able to switch the pump on and off and hear it buzz - if not there is a problem with the pump or wiring - multi-meter can be used to sort that out.

ok did a direct fuel pump test and all it is doing is making a clicking noise when i make contact, sounds like a boot solenoid, tried tapping it , but nothing, so looks like i need a new one,

what other fuel pumps out there are compatible with the mk1 gti 1.6?

and has anyone got a newish one for sale?

thanks

I've just bought a new pump from GSF (?95) - I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed!

I had the same symptoms as you - fuel pump would click a little, but not turn over, and there's no fuel getting to the engine.

I'll let you know how I get on…

A word of warning with the gsf fuel pump relay, i had one fail in a short period of time for no apparent reason, the car would randomly cut out and after 5 minutes would restart fine, the more i think about it im sure the relay was a year old, 2 at most, now stuck a genuine relay in and fine since, i would no longer trust one and would go genuine even used genuine

all good for now. changed the pump today, got a second hand one off someone in the forum, he needed some bits so did a swap, top lad,

when my car was redlining it seized up the fuel pump, which blew the relay and shorted the battery, all bad things come in 3s, so all ahve been changed, now the car is giong for its MOT and then TAZ and then just to be driven,

thank god forthis forum.
