Looking for OEM

Anyone interested in swapping an original exhaust compatible with a 1983 1.8 GTi for my brand new 63 stainless steel one?! Full front to back system, It was fitted as part of the deal but I'd really rather have an original that doesn't growl at me so much!

Literally done 1/2 a mile since fitting and all I ask is for something of original spec that's in good nick.

No cost, just that whoever wants it sorts out the swap at their time/expense. I've even got a local specialist that could do the work and would do it at mates rates for me.

It's the one from Heritage Parts that's about £600-700 BTW and I'm in North London.

So about a week later and 20 views but no one even tempted to ask for more detail.

Just wondering if it's because you'd all rather keep the original, or maybe the particular one I've got isn't desirable? Or even if the idea of the swap sounds like a scam or too good to be legit?

I'd be really grateful if anyone could give me some proper honest feedback please! I'm thick skinned, you won't offend., I really thought I was offering a good deal but maybe I'm not!

I'll admit it piqued my interest. I didn't reply as whilst I have a 'std' exhuast on my '83 GTi, the back box isn't the oval shape (it's round), and I'm a long way from London.
I've probably done 500 miles on it (dry weather) since I fitted it a couple of years ago when I finished my build.

paceman - Coincidence you mentioning the back box having a round profile and not oval.

I've been half heartedly looking at exhausts, but won't need one for a while yet.

Plot is I got a new Bosal set up (middle section and back box) fitted about 15 years ago, just before the car went off the road.

Upshot is it's still virtually new as a result and because of that I'd intended to keep it… trouble is when I cross referenced the part numbers last year I discovered the back box was infact for a '76 to '82 1.6 GTI and not correct to my '83 1.8 (middle section is the right one), so looks like I had my eye wiped by the garage back when I wasn't just so up to speed on such things

… and back to the point - the incorrect one I have is a round profile, the correct one shows as you say to be oval if you check with Bosal.

The correct back box appears to be no longer available and that may well have also been the case all those years ago, hence the incorrect one being fitted.

They're presumably specced / sold as different items, for different models for a reason?

I'm maybe wrongly assuming the 1.6 and 1.8 have no physical differences insofar as the underbody routing of the exhaust is concerned so will fit one another in the physical sense?

If so, is the difference in the two then to do with how they perform / flow / pressures maybe?

Yeah, I looked for an oval one but couldn't get one, I believe the later cabby ones were round and they were 1.8 so I'm not sure how much difference it makes. Maybe sound? Same mounting points and it fits perfectly. Unless you get under the car you can't see the box anyway. I was looking at a stainless system but towards the end of my project funds were low (still are!) and I just wanted it on the road!

Had another look and the Cabrio, in 1.8 GTI form at any rate (and which is also shown as oval), is a different back box again from the other two tin-top versions, so the plot thickens.

They are very specific about the chassis numbers that each runs from and to, presumably also for a reason.

I put a Bosal system on the MK2 (1.8 8v Digifant), was hard enough trying to track down all the sections, took quite a while… after a cursory search it's looking like the MK1's might be even harder.

If you're not keen on stainless, they're definitely a high quality alternative and were maybe even OE.
