wipers working in slow mo,

just wondered if any one could shed some light on a problem i'm having with my gti, the windscreen wipers work, but there extremely slow, to the point it looks like there about to stop. i was thinking i could be the motor about to die?

not sure how long its been like this as i not long bought it as a project and only just getting started on it.

mk1`s are renowned for slow wipers, you can convert the motor to a later mk2 version which is suposedly meant to cure it?

first off though i would take the scuttle panel cover off and have a look at the wiper mechanism, remove the 2 tonnes of old leaves and dirt in the scuttle and give all the linkages a bath in wd40 see if it improves the operation? if it does get some spray grease on there and it will help keep them freed up

if not do the motor swap
