VDO Oil Temperature gauge

Hi, this has probably been covered and / or this is a stupid question but…

I am wanting to install the three extra VDO dials to my Golf GTI and I have a 180 degree oil temp sender but a dial that only goes up to 150 degrees.
Will this combination work correctly ?

I believe, form what I've read, that the 150 degree dial is more authentic and that the 180 degree dial is an Audi unit.
The sender is marked 049 919 563B and has VW and Audi symbols on it and says "6-24v 180 degrees" on the side.  Will this combination cause problems or false readings?

Please help!

you probably need a white 150degree vw oil temp sender, same one as used by the mfa on mk1/2 gti.

the blue 180degree audi sender is a different rating

Thanks, this is what I was thinking.  I suppose that i could actually just use the one in the car and forfeit the MBA oil temp readout.

I have a VDO guage which reads up to 170degress. (60-170)
Which would be the correct sender?

you'll need a blue 0-180 one from 90s audi 80 (amongst others) most likely. this is what i have in my mk2 with audi 0-170 gauge anyway

I fitted a blue one which I bought from Ebay and it's not registering at all. Swapped cables over with MFA and gauge responds (White collar). Looking like the blue collar sensor is goosed?? :(

the trouble with the 170 gauge is its far to big a range to be useful on a VW engine. it takes an age before the sensor will even lift off the stop as the normal operating temp of the vw engines is around 90degrees, and if you look at the sensor markings thats just a smidgeon off the stop

my abf runs pretty cool as they have a slightly colder stat in than the average engien so i find the vdo temp gauge is basically useless day to day

So the one I have might be OK? As I say, when I swapped the wires from sensors over, the white sensor sends a good reading to the VDO gauge

maybe due to white being different rating to blue, reads higher for any given temp

The white reads higher you mean? Best way to test the blue? sticking it in boiling water I'm guessing?
