Switched ignition live feed to radio?

I basically know what I want to do but not 100% sure on how to go about doing it. Basically I would like my radio power feed to only be on with the first switch of the ignition as the previous owner used the cigarette lighter with a switch in the ash tray which I had to remove. Would i just be able to find the wire i need using a multimeter and just replace the spade terminal with one that has the radio power and the existing wire attached? this is the part i dont know for sure and dont want to be making dodgy connections!
Cheers,
Matt

There are a group of ignition live spades on the back of the fuse box. I used these for my vdo's.
However, there should also be a standard radio loom providing it hasn't been cut out. Mines permanent live, but it's up to you I guess. Just like the idea of being able to be working on the car, or washing it or something, and be able to listen to the radio without the ignition on.

well i just didnt want it to drain the battery? but i suppose it probably wont if its not on all the time, where exactly are they on the fuse box? the wiring diagram told me that there is a radio terminal on the light switch in the dash but cannot find it

Can't remember which spades exactly, but you should be able to find them with a multimeter.
I wouldn't have thought the radio would use any battery if it is off.
There should be a connector in behind the radio.

Depending on the ages of your car, you may not have a 'position 1' on the ignition. My 1984 cabby doesn't.
Here are a coue of photos to help you.

thanks dan i shall have a go at using them cheers, now my only issue now is with putting the wiring to the speakers as i dont have the rubber boot type thing that you normall have to carry wiring to the doors, did they come with them on the mk1's? just to tidy things up really and stop wires getting trapped i suppose

You will have to have a permanent live for the memory part of the radio otherwise you will have to re tune it each time you switch it on

Plenty of scrapers for rubber boots.
Re the permanent live, I've changed to the old style 'twisty knob' radio so no need for one. You are right there though.

My mk1 has no rubber boot thing. Poverty edition 'c' with no electronics in the doors! So I guess it would only be the ones that had radios from standard.

Actually thinking on what r chez 08 said my old "n" was the same (no electrics in the door).
you better check you have the big round hole in the door and body first.
I wouldnt want to drill that hole out

I used mk2 tubes on my cabrioe, but i had to make the holes in the A pillar bigger. the doors were both big enough already for some reason, i guess doors had been replaced
top tip for making small holes bigger with holesaw: (cant take credit for this one though!)

i think you can get proper mk1 type which are a bit smaller, I had to go for mk2 ones because I had electric windows as well as central locking and the plugs wouldnt go thru the holes! MK2 rear ones are a bit narrower but I think still too big for the mk1 hole. maybe try mk1 boot ones, though not sure if the ends are round…

roundy hole is for loom into the doors aye, std mk1 tube must be available for those with door speakers? mine had nothing so i went for the mk2 stuff plus as i say wasnt big enough to get me plugs thru.
big square hole I have no idea, maybe its just part of the pressing or for ventilation or whatever. certainly nothing that should be fitted in it I dont think

had a quick look in etka, I cant find one for a golf only scirocco with part number 433959845, with the notation '30/23/30' not that it really helps you as it was dropped over a year ago
I think that one is going to be too big anyway as I got one off a scirocco in the past which was same size as mk2 golf iirc
