Temporary fix is to hit it (the solenoid) with a hammer.
Permanent fix is to swap the starter.

Aaaah right, in that case I'm guessing your ignition switch might be sticky, or faulty. Does it feel normal when you put it from position 2 (normal running) to position 3 (starting) and back? Or does it feel unusual? Also, don't dismiss the (remote) possibility that the new part is faulty.
The check to do would be to put a voltmeter onto the solenoid terminal of the starter, if it reads 0V when it sticks, its a starter issue, if it reads +12V when it sticks, its an ignition switch issue.

ta,il check that now..when it stuck on i pulld the positive terminal off the battery and the 2 plug terminals off the starter..just gone back out now to see what was up..put the battery teminal back on and it spun over again (without the 2 plug on terminals on the starter, just the main to the + side of battery) im confused, i hate wiring!

There's 2 plug on terminals on the starter? Mine only has one. In any case, if it spins the starter with these disconnected, its definitely stuck on.
Ignition switches are a known weakness on the Mk1, they normally fail by not switching the circuits together, rather than keeping them connected. The starter solenoid is much more likely to stick than the ignition switch stick on.

well it stuck on again so i pulled the battery terminal off again and gave the solenoid a whack..put the battery back on and it stopped spinnin so im guessin it is a faulty starter afterall..thanks for the help.much
