Speedometer Cable
Hi,
I started getting a few problems with a jumpy speedo needle, looking through the old forum it looks like it could be related to the cable. This only seems to happen on motorways if I go above 60/70 and then the trip distance and the odometer stop as well. Next time I start the car they both work again. Is this all to do with the cable, or is there something else?
Jon.

Hi Jon
i had the same problem with mine, i am talking about my 1.8 GTI
In order to find out what was causing it i first started at the gear box and replaced the plastic drive , cost a few pounds from my main VW dealer . Problem still existed so i then replaced the speedo cable , about ?35.00 .
Still the same , unfortunatly it turned out to be the speedo head , [although mine jumped and used to get stuck ] i was lucky to get a complete one from eBay for ?55.00 problem sorted .
If you start with the cheapest first the solution could be cheap .
Cheers Chudd….

From memory, where the speedo cable goes into the back of the speedo head it's a case of square peg in to square hole. Before replacing the cable, check the speedo to ensure the square hole hasn't rounded off, otherwise as Chudd says you'll still have same problem.
If the hole is still square then cable should (?) fix it!
