I prefer to use the uprated speakers in the original locations. It gives a good enough setup for me. The setup that late cabrios have as standard is much better as it has 13cm round speakers in the doors plus separate tweeters and the rear cards have 6x4s.

My 83 GTI only has 2 6x4s in the front but I'm not fussed so much about sound quality in there as its still off the road in the garage at the mo  The sound its still pretty good though even with the original panasonic headunit when you use a tape adapter to plug in a minidisk player etc. You can add 6x4s in the rear parcel shelve supports of a tintop GTI too, there are places for them to go.

I'd never cut a parel shelf or door cards to fit any other setup. You have to think… The more parcel shelves and cards get cut the more rare and sort after it'll make my mint originals

Make a new shelf if you want 6x9s and you can always fit a sub if you want more bass.

Cheers.

I gave up with the flimsy rear shelf and made one out of half inch mdf. when I put 6x9s in it and covered them with black speaker cloth to hide them it seemed to take half my boot space…so I made a clever 'wedge' in the centre of the mdf shelf which angles the speakers forward, improves the sound, and means they hardly take any boot space. Covered the whole thing (not speaker openings!) in black carpet with staple gun, very pleased with result. Also wrap carpet under edges to stop squeaks and rattles.Whole thing took me about two hours, so with care it could be done neatly in a day! May stick a photo on one day…
Needs stronger support than the silly rubber things - used black boot laces or similar with lops to fit tailgate mountings. Also, don't fix it to the back of the rear seat, so you can lift the thing out when required. You can also make little pivots to the front of the side supports to stop it sliding forward when you open the tailgate, as on Mk2.
Put your old shelf away safely for a rainy day, or flog it on Ebay!
