Self destructing speedo !
On the way to work this morning my speedo started to dance about like a bee in a bottle, hitting the post to stop it going all the way round. It's done this a few times before. However this time the needle has snapped. What's left of the stump doesn't move at all. I'm assuming I need to get the speedo rebuilt and have the cable replaced.
I can't even see how to get at the speedo, is it a big job? Also does anyone know of someone that can repair it once it's removed?
Car = 93 Clipper cabrio, with 80k on the clock.
Thanks!!
Luke

i wouldnt bother trying, get another set of clocks! the speedo can be swapped out so that gives you more choice of speedos when looking on classifieds/ebay.
you can adjust the milage while the speedo is out easily, look down the top and you can see the digits and the gears that drive them. use 2 thin screwdrivers to push the gear 1 way and the number the otherm, then click it round till the desired milage is on your new speedo.
taking it out the dash isnt hard either, need to remove the surround which involves pulling the switch trims then switches (carefully!) then the heater slider knobs and surround, plus stereo. then a few screws and the trim comes off, and clocks arte then accessible. the speedo cable can be a mare to remove, needs a squeeze on the clip wiggle and pull to remove

you can fit mfa clocks yes, straight swap. just you wont have mfa stalk wiring so you wont be able to select any of the modes. if you can find the plugs its not too hard to add, but you could just leave it working as a digital clock

you need the mfa stalk and wiring in order to select avg sopeed, distance travelled, oil temp, outside temp, mpg etc. without the stalk and wiring it'll just work as a digital clock
the mfa wiring all goes to a plug on the back of the clock, 2 plugs if its the later mfa cluster where the 1/2 mode switch is on the stalk not the front of the dash

Hi Ericcat
I've just posted a brand new unused, still in its box from VW speedo on eBay if this gets you out of a jam. It's a Motometer uniit - item number 320818947037 - the reserve is a tenner
Hope this helps
