s_l_o_w windscreen wipers...

Okay - just aquired a white mk1 GTI. The wipers are sooooo slow and limp. I suspect they're 23 years old. Is this a common problem? Anyone know where to get replacement motors and is it easy to do?

Its a fairly common thing. You can upgrade to a Mk2 wiper motor, which is much better.

I don't think a mk2 wiper motor upgrade is necessary.  I had really slow wipers and all that was needed was to take them off, clean and re-grease the spindles and put them back on. My wiper speed is fine now.

found an easy fix.. i used to be a biker and had loads of chain wax (thich grease like spray) left lying around, rather than strip down or change motors, just a quick spray of this lubricant has worked a treat, and to top it off its waterproof.. Trip to your local motorbike dealer and get some chain lub, well worth it
